About
Course Overview: Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) Training Programme – Legal and Statutory Safeguarding in Practice This accredited training programme equips Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs) with the legal knowledge, practical skills, and leadership capabilities required to fulfil their statutory responsibilities in line with UK safeguarding legislation and guidance. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the Children Act 1989 and 2004, Working Together to Safeguard Children (2018), Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE 2024), the Education Act 2002 (Section 175), and the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018. Participants will explore the core legal functions of the DSL role, including leading safeguarding within their setting, managing disclosures and referrals, ensuring compliant record-keeping, and working collaboratively with external safeguarding partners. Key learning areas include recognising thresholds of harm and categories of abuse, handling safeguarding disclosures appropriately, safer recruitment and managing allegations against staff, lawful information sharing and confidentiality, maintaining evidentiary safeguarding records, and embedding a safeguarding culture throughout the organisation. This course also strengthens understanding of multi-agency safeguarding systems and the DSL’s role in contributing to coordinated child protection responses. Suitable for both new and experienced DSLs, the programme is designed for professionals in schools, early years settings, faith-based groups, voluntary organisations, and independent or alternative provisions. By the end of the course, participants will be able to apply relevant child protection legislation with confidence, lead safeguarding practices within their organisation, respond effectively to complex safeguarding concerns, maintain legally sound documentation, and promote a child-centred, legally compliant safeguarding culture.
